I was visiting family out of town today when something unexpected happened with an animal spirit I know but have never actually met.

The family members I was visiting have a small rescue dog named Bella. Bella is always anxious around people she is not very familiar with – I fall under that category. Though we’ve met many times, I am not a regular to their house. Though crated, she started barking as soon as I arrived.

Bella was brought out on a lead. I had her sit over and over until she was calm enough to let me smell my hand. A minute or two later she turned and let me enter, however spent the next while growling, looking menacingly out the side of her eyes, posturing in front of me, ready to keep me in line should I make a false move. She couldn’t decide if she wanted to sniff me or bite me. It wasn’t long before she was put outside.

I decided to go downstairs. When I stood and walked across the room, I realized a large shepherd was walking beside me. It was Dutchess; the faithful companion to a spirit I know named Andrew Marcos!

Andrew introduced me to Dutchess as part of a conversation he was having with his Mom with me as a conduit. I didn’t know he owned a dog until that moment. From my place here in Canada, and Dutchess in New York, Andrew in spirit shared appreciation for those caring for her in his absence, while Dutchess helped me understand that the two of them remained in contact after Andrew’s passing.

Dutchess has since passed over and is with Andrew now (they have both come to me recently) and here she is again, walking beside me with her calm, gentle demeanour. I had no idea why she was there, but since Bella was the only possible explanation, I asked Dutchess if she might help Bella feel comfortable around me. When I came back upstairs, Dutchess came with me, sat beside me where I sat in a chair, then lay down on the floor at my feet. Her presence to me was palpable. I felt I could reach out and touch her.

As Dutchess would be four or five times larger than Bella, (Bella the size of a mini pinscher) I wasn’t sure how on earth Dutches could help Bella feel comfortable. It was going to be an interesting experience. Here’s what happened…

When Bella was invited in the house shortly afterward, she came running over to me, tail wagging and dropped her toy at my feet. From there she frolicked around the house and let me walk around without batting an eye. I was able to pat her without arousing any fear in her whatsoever. I looked down at Dutchess and up again to Bella in complete awe.

My sister-in-law soon commented on how extraordinary it is for Bella to allow anyone to be in the house. She couldn’t believe her eyes. Here was Bella stretched out on her belly on an automen in front of me, wagging her tail, sniffing, then going back to her doggy relaxation plan without being the least bit concerned that a stranger was inches.

Apparently, this simply never happens.

Thank you, Dutchess, for your calming influence on wee Bella. You were a completely unexpected guest and a welcome one for all.

How blessed am I?!

Catherine ~
