Comparing Myself to TV Mediums

The other day a client asked, “What is it like to communicate with the beyond?”  I spoke briefly about comparing visions, day and sleep dreams, and the place where imagination begins. There are similarities and differences in my experience. The question got me thinking…

It interests me how Mediumship is portrayed in movies and TV series. Often, programs begin pretty tame but soon become drastically Hollywood, with evil spirits, dark entities and horror creeping in; I suppose to keep people’s attention? Personally, I find my experiences intensely fascinating in and of themselves never mind efforts to keep things interesting.

I presume the author of The InBetween series currently airing on NBC has done a lot of reading or consulted a Medium. I find myself saying, “Ah, yes. I understand why they would emphasize…” this or that.

Two ideas that are vastly different to mine are these:

          1. The way Medium Cassie Bishop talks to spirits – she uses her mouth. Lol

When a spirit appears to me, we don’t ‘talk’ to each other in the same way I speak to people. When Cassie walks around town with a spirit speaking with her voice, I’m like… “Why would you do that? Everyone listening to you will look at you funny.”

Okay, once I had a particularly bothersome spirit who was in my face over a period of days. I spoke out loud to him to remind him clearly and firmly he was no longer incarnate and therefore his efforts to influence how or when people (se moi in that moment) did what he wanted, when he wanted was literally a non-starter. He got the message. All (99.9% of) other spirits – I speak to in my head. We share thoughts. Our conversation is in our minds, or to use their words, “In Between”. Conversations are telepathic…We don’t move our lips. Lol. To me their portrayal of conversation is inaccurate. However, I understand why it might be a bit awkward in visual media, to hear voices and not see lips moving. Curious.

2. The complete, full body response Cassie has during dramatic sharing by a spirit

The series premise has young Cassie sharing visions and experiences from beyond to her father in the NYPD. Together they solve crimes. There is some drama involved – being a police show, which is fine. It is her experience of receiving which I find intriguing.

Let’s say the scene has someone mysteriously cut on the arm. Here’s how they play it: Cassie walks into her place of work. A vision takes her over and she finds herself looking at herself in a mirror. She is confused because in the mirror she sees a slash appear on her arm and blood begins to flow. Soon there are multiple slashes and Cassie is living it. Before you know it, Cassie is screaming at the top of her lungs, fighting off an unseen assailant, calling out for the assault to stop in a state of complete and utter, wide-eyed panic. BOOM she’s back on this side, standing at work place gasping for breath and no one has noticed anything askew.

Here’s the difference…

Were this my vision, I might look down at myself and feel/see a slash on my arm as Cassie did. I may understand a spirit is portraying an experience they have had of being cut and would ask for further information about the incident. I may feel, see, sense the situation, but I don’t freak out and start screaming for things to stop. A) it didn’t/isn’t happening to me, B) I understand this is a transmission because I am conscious of my place beyond this realm, C) I know myself to be witness to, and either feel privileged to have someone trust me enough to share and offer gratitude or choose to consciously disengage or separate myself from the sharing. I don’t have any need to flail around, scream, gasp, or any such thing. I am simply a witness, without engaged emotion. Vastly different, don’t you think?

I’ll keep watching the program and hope they can keep from getting too silly.

Thanks for listening.

Share your own experiences, if you like.

With love,
Catherine ~
