Spirit of Wilkinson Jail
The story Spirit of Wilkinson Jail did not arrive as a single place or moment. It unfolded gradually, drawing me into layers of history that stretch across Vancouver Island—from the Oyster River in central Vancouver Island to Saanich, through Victoria, and outward into the greater history of British Columbia and Canada itself.
What began as a curiosity became a calling, as voices and impressions emerged alongside documented history and the lives of those who helped shape this land. Some names will be familiar, others long forgotten, yet all remain present in ways that continue to influence the places we walk today.
As with my previous work, Spirit of 17 Mile House Pub and Voices of Children in Spirit, this story is guided by Spirit and grounded in respect—for the people, the land, and the truths that ask to be remembered. It weaves together historical record, spiritual communication, and the lingering energy held within place.
