Are you looking for a gentle way to deepen your connection to Spirit?
It doesn’t have to feel far away, mysterious, or out of reach. There is a gentle doorway that meets you right where you are. A doorway that is available to everyone:
Animals.
I’m not just speaking of the ones we love and live with, but all of them—those that cross our path unexpectedly, those that linger, those that seem to arrive at just the right moment. Birds, reptiles, sea creatures, even the smallest bee or bug.
When we begin to pay attention, something shifts. We notice that these encounters don’t always feel random. There is an opportunity to step into wonder––in a quiet and unassuming way, are they responding to us? Are they reflecting something? Acknowledging our journey? Can we begin to imagine the Universe is not only listening…but gently supporting us in subtle ways?
I remember when I first began consciously working with the animal spirits. I purchased a deck of animal spirit cards and began, quite simply, by asking questions and pulling a card. Almost immediately, doubt crept in.
Was this the right card?
Had I chosen correctly?
Was I influencing the outcome somehow?
The more I practised, the more anxious I became. Reshuffle. Pull again. Doubt. Reshuffle.
Until one day, I pulled a card: Moose. As I had been doing, I questioned it. I placed it back into the deck, preparing to try again.
That’s when I heard it—clear, direct, and unmistakable. Spirit said,
“Throw the cards on the floor.”
I was mortified. That didn’t feel respectful. That didn’t fit with what I believed I was supposed to do. We treat these tools with care, don’t we?
Again, the instruction came.
“Throw the cards on the floor.”
By the third time, I knew better than to argue. So, I did. I threw the cards on the floor. They scattered everywhere—every single one landing face down…except one.
Moose.
Face up.
There it was. Not subtle. Not symbolic. Not something I could second-guess or explain away.
In that moment, something shifted.
I understood it was never about choosing the “right” card. It was never about getting it perfect. My role was not to choose a card at all, it was to hold space and invite Spirit to work through me. To communicate. To guide my hands. To share without interference from my doubt.
I find I no longer need the cards. The connection is established. I can simply tune in, and the presence of an animal spirit comes forward in its own way. It took time, but the practice was joyful and fill a place of awe with each new encounter created. To begin with, using cards is a excellent doorway to strengthening your connection to the spirit world.
That’s what I wish more people understood.
You don’t have to reach for something distant or complicated to connect with Spirit. The pathway can be right in front of you. The humming bird, the butterfly, the kingfisher hovering in the sky. The creature that pauses just long enough to be noticed. The unexpected, the ordinary, the easily dismissed.
If you are open to it, animal spirits can be a beautiful place to begin. A quiet reminder that you are already far more connected than you realize. You can find animal spirit medicine’s online if you haven’t found a deck you enjoy.
