Let this be what you hear tonight
At 8 o’clock one evening
A lady (bird) came to say
To the Ant
“We can not go on like this
We two
What will the neighbours say?”
And Ant,
In all his glorious black,
Took up his lovers torch
And said,
“We mustn’t falter now
For fear of others words
Let your heart sing for me
As mine for you
Beats louder still by day and night
Than all the crickets fiddle tunes
Than all the stars
And all the moons
Than bees and honey
Flowers and trees
Or blades of grass
Or winter eves
For no one loves you
More than me
Sweet Lady bird
You are my heart and soul
And true,
There’s no one can say I look like you
Or you like me
But do we care?
A love this grand?
Cannot be damped
By those less fortunate than we
I love you dearest
Will you marry me?”
And so,
She took his gentle hand
And danced in the arms of her own true love
No more afraid
Of the thoughts of others
If she had her druthers
Her heart would lead
Amen to the love
Of Beetle and Ant!
Hold up your glass and say
A toast
Sing out an oath!
And offer good wishes
To them Both!

When I was a young child my father would write little stories like this for me. I know, without a doubt, that this love poem is a whisper from that dear man, from over there beyond the veil.
Love you, Dad
