How can I stop this overwhelming feeling of anxiety, around negative energy?

I was recently at a mindful meditation workshop. One of the ideas to calm the heart was wrapped up in a little phrase,

“Name it to tame it.”

I was pleased with the idea because this articulates a practice I have found very powerful in my spirit work, especially when a spirit blends with me to share information of how they passed, or health issues/experiences they suffered.

If I am able to name it, or ‘bear witness’ by acknowledging what they are sharing, the energy/spirit seems to be able to relax because they have been heard.

Here’s what I do. If a spirit is sharing something I find overwhelming, such as a deep pain across my chest to indicate they passed from pneumonia, I acknowledge the pain, give gratitude for their sharing and for trusting me to hear them, followed by a (sometimes very stern) request to be released from witnessing further.

It is not unusual for those of us who work at a spirit level to feel anxious. This may be important for you to hear. You are not alone in your experience. If I am doing a lot of spirit work, I take care of myself by taking supplements to balance my energy and support me to move through the sensation of anxiety.

Having a way to ground yourself is also very important. Spirit says to me, “How can you look to the stars without your feet firmly planted to earth?” We must pinch our ears, stomp our feet, breathe deeply, send our First Chakra energy deep into the earth to ground ourselves, so the energies that greet us, don’t carry us off the ground aka creating feelings of anxiety.

Finally, I would suggest letting go of the idea of ‘negative’ energy. Energy is simply information. It is our mind that labels things negative or positive.

Something may be confusing, curious, interesting, unusual, unfamiliar, bizarre, intrusive, any number of definitions. As soon as you label it negative, you open and invite the door to receive the energy to match your perception. You say to yourself, “Euwww, this is horribly negative.” and Spirit hears, “I want to experience this as negative.” Suddenly, you feel dreadful.

Do your best to be articulate the experience you are having by naming it with as much accuracy as you can. This also makes it easier for you separate yourself from the experience, should you wish to.

* Name it

* Give gratitude for being trusted to understand/bear witness (what an honour!)

* Let the spirit know you no longer need to experience it

(You may need to do that last part several times and be quite firm)
Finally

*work to ground yourself to the healing and nurturing Mother Earth.
